Bone Gnawer - Feast of Flesh

BONE GNAWER - Feast of Flesh (PULVERIZED Records CD 2009)
Can death metal be fun and humoristic, but still gruesome and dark? Sure, it can. Not everything has to be dead serious in this style of music. Take such Bone Gnawer, who are great band and who decided to give us these gory tales on cannibalism and tortures, where you'll find texts about mutilating, chopping, cooking and eating human flesh. This horror is always fun to read, however sick it is haha, and I could never understand moaners, who say that this theme for the lyrics is too cheesy. Who cares? There are really well written lyrics on "Feast on Flesh", written by Kam Lee, so do I, as a fan of death metal, gore and horror tales, need anything more? Nope. Is it cheesy? Maybe. Do I care? No, I don't.
But lyrics aside, musically Bone Gnawer is also absolutely awesome. I like that groove, aggression and simplistic, pure death metal feel, which their music has. On one hand Bone Gnawer takes a lot of influence from the Swedish death metal and bands like Grave. And obviously that's exactly what you can expect from Rogga Johansson and his style of death metal, which he developed over the years in such bands as PaganizerRibspreader or The Grotesquery. Bone Gnawer music has also a little of that US death metal groove and brutality, alike to bands such as Six Feet Under, Necrophagia or Obituary, which all fits perfectly when melted in one filthy cauldron. Heavy, hammering riffage, which has an unbelievable feel and influence to bang the skull. Creepy, gruesome atmosphere all the way through... Sick, but absolutely fantastic sounding vocals of Kam Lee. These songs are pretty simple, riffs are far from the boring technical death metal, song structures also very basic, but that helps to get into the music. And this style of death metal, which is old school to the bone, do not requires anything elseIt all is unbelievable memorable and catchy, like the fantastic “Cannibal Cookout”, which is definitely the best song on the album and whose rhythm, riffage and vocal parts will all take you into a maniacal, insane dance.
To listen to "Feast of Flesh" is like watching all these nasty B-class gore horror movies. They're ridiculous sometimes, cheesy, with bad acting and quite tasteless. But we love it anyway. Maybe this is also why I like Bone Gnawer music also. Good stuff, yes.
Standout tracks: “Cannibal Cookout”, "Feast of Flesh", "Defleshed and Skinned"
Verdict: 75/100
