Sepulchral Cult - Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants

SEPULCHRAL CULT - Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants (PUTRID CULT - CD 2021)

"Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants" is a debut album of Sepulchral Cult, who are one of these new, but oh so interesting Polish bands, which I was introduced to recently. I was just caught in the vortex of obscurity by Upon the Altar (great album!) and now it is time for these guys. And again, this shit was released by Putrid Cult, what certainly is a noteworthy fact and proof of good work of this label.

Anyway, with "Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants" we get a very solid dose of morbid, cavernous death metal. You could easily add that "old school" tag to it, although I would rather be careful with it, because it surely doesn't sound like a 1991 death metal album. Here, it all sounds more savage, more obscure and bleak (sometimes on the verge of death / black metal!), more dense in its atmosphere, which is almost claustrophobic (so, imagine the feeling of being buried alive in a coffin or locked in the catacomb)… You could almost feel that fuggy aura in these riffs, which do correspondent perfectly with that sort of ghastly vocals.

And that atmosphere is the something I like the most about "Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants", because I won't say that Sepulchral Cult managed to create anything extraordinary here. Songs can be slightly monotonous after a while, riffs and songs structures have rather simplistic nature, but this way you can easily get into the whole music, if only you will survive the crushing wall of noise. Everything obviously sounds crude and raw, and Sepulchral Cult rather avoids things like melodies or shit like that, it’s just filth from start to finish. And it's a solid album, I quite like it. There's definitely something intriguing about it and if you set the proper mood for it, then the listening can be quite fun.

Standout tracks: "Different Paths"

Verdict: 70/100
