Resurrected In Festering Slime Compilation

Resurrected In Festering Slime (SOULSELLER RECORDS LP 2008)

Back in 1991 "Projections of a Stained Mind" compilation was released. This highly worthy LP / CD was introducing a whole bunch of mostly Swedish young death metal bands - most of which really blown the underground scene with their music and soon became legends. In 2008 Soulseller Records unleashed "Resurrected In Festering Slime" compilation, with the new generation of (mostly) Swedish death metal bands, which they thought were worth checking out. Of course, we can have a right to doubt if any of them will ever get the same status as Dismember, Entombed or Unleashed... But let's be honest - times are different and it's not about the same anymore. There won’t be 1991 anymore. But "Resurrected In Festering Slime" can introduce you to some great bands, many of which already have some albums released, some which have already split up... But there are some real killers here, which if you don’t know already, you should check immediately.

Side A is the better for me and brings the best bands. There are two acts, which especially caught my attention, both of which were very short-living bands. Eviscerated only did one demo "Rituals of Reanimation" and they also did this one song for the compilation, before splitting up. Later some of these guys formed Antichrist. Anyway, their "The Chalice" is a killer piece of death metal filth, alike to Repugnant, Verminous, Nominon... This song is just killer, it sounds dark, evil, morbid... Just perfect, what a shame then that we never heard from them again!!! Rape Pillage and Burn will bring your attention for participation of Richard Cabeza and two guys from Divine Eve in this project! But it also lasted just very shortly, with one EP "Songs of Death... Songs of Hell" in 2009. Song on this compilation, called "1911", is just killer OSDM in the vein of Dismember and Entombed. Great vibe, killer riffs - it's all there! Speaking of short living bands, I need to mention also Graveless and their "In Articulo Mortis". This is a band quite alike to Eviscerated (well, they're both from Uppsala), but maybe not quite as good, especially the production is much rawer. But I like their song also. I truly wish to have their only demo, "Condemned to a Nameless Death" from 2010. It is surprising no one ever thought of resurrecting demos from these two bands (and Envenomed also!) on LP / CD!!!

On side A are also bands, which some of you will be familiar with, as they lasted for more years and released several albums - and these bands are Bombs of Hades, Feral and Maim. They all sound great as always. "Carnivores" is a savage and more vicious song that most of Bombs of Hades stuff. Maim's "Envy the Dead" sounds very harsh and obscure, but it's just great piece of death metal, always great to hear stuff like that. Feral – good as always with that groove and memorable riffs. Pure Swedish death metal.

Side B has couple of songs, which are much more mediocre and simply forgettable. Unspoken with “Cold Bleak and Dead” is one of them – just boring Grave influenced sort of death metal. Mr Death and “Jesus Christ Fuck” - this band was always kind of mediocre to me. Their debut album is fine, but the further we go, the more boring and forgettable they are. Such is this song. Chronic Torment and “Certain Death” - not bad, really, but there are just better bands here, in my opinion, so this song quickly turns into mediocre. But I like how they use keyboards in the music, which is something more unusual for old school death metal. Crucifyre was never among my favourite bands, I don’t even bother myself with their albums. This song called “The Fetching” is OK, there’s a good vibe and some nice riffs here, I can listen to it, but I am far from being insanely obsessed with it. Bonesaw – forget it, boring as fuck.

Luckily Stench with “Stench of Death” really improve the quality – this is a killer song and just worthy, impressive project from the guys you may know from Tribulation. Stench is more vicious, more morbid death metal style than Tribulation – and “Stench of Death” is a fine example for this. It’s killer, fast, evil stuff, love it. Next we have Morbus Chron!!!! These dudes had some amazing recordings in their early days, I love their 7” and the debut album, so don’t be surprised that also their “The Putrid Smell of Hell” breaks my neck within a fuckin second. It's just perfect sounding band for me – and I love their stuff just as much as Repugnant, Verminous or Stench.

To conclude, I like "Resurrected In Festering Slime" quite much, because there are some killer bands here, with some exclusive songs, which are great to hear. Stench, Eviscerated, Rape Pillage and Burn, Bombs of Hades or Morbus Chron are the worthiest participants here. Sadly, there are some more mediocre songs also, but never terrible, I am happy to say. So, "Projections of a Stained Mind" it isn’t, but surely one of my favourite compilations anyway.

Verdict: 80/100
