VONULFSREICH - Northern Shamanism (FALLEN TEMPLE - CD 2021)
I know Vonülfsrëich from two of their releases only, "Hyperborëan Hills" album and "Ylfsreälm Inguz" EP. But it turns out those Finns have many more recordings done since their inception in 2012 and "Northern Shamanism" is one of them. It's a debut release actually. There are four tracks here, but damn, what a great black metal piece it is. It may even be my favourite stuff from Vonülfsrëich so far.
I mean, sure, Vonülfsrëich always played that Darkthrone'ish classic black metal. Their music keeps that cold, grim and hateful atmosphere on every recording, it is always very harsh and kind of simplistic... "Northern Shamanism" is no different. But damn, some of these riffs, especially when they get close also to some old Satyricon or Dodheimsgard, are brilliant. They even add a bit of melody like in the excellent "Gateway (by the Hill's Eternal Eye)". I like the atmosphere Vonülfsrëich created here a lot, as well as that harsh feeling and viciousness. All in all, this is a very good effort. Short – because there’s only 20 minutes of music – but it’s enough for me. This review will also be short, but you definitely should invest a bit of money to add "Northern Shamanism" to your collection.
Verdict: 75/100
