Megalith Levitation / Dekonstruktor - Split CD

MEGALITH LEVITATION / DEKONSTRUCTOR - Split CD (AESTHETIC DEATH Productions CD 2020)

Aesthetic Death Productions likes to provoke the listeners with music that can never be putted into one obvious box or music, which is always challenging. As you may remember, most of the stuff they release is experimental, weird, avantgarde bands... Stuff, which is very hard to get into, even more to enjoy. It's no different with this split CD between two Russian projects Dekonstruktor and Megalith Levitation. Both these bands have been labelled as stoner / doom metal and I have no desire to change that description as it rather gives a justice to the music, although not necessarily describe its experimental and dark, vicious character fully.

Listen to Dekonstruktor's "Beheaded Horizon" for instance and its combination of slow paced, doomy heavy riffage with some dissonant, weird noises and how they create a bleak, but very sinister and kind of hypnotizing atmosphere. Even more noteworthy is their second song, a ten minutes long monolith titled "Magma Pulse", which is an instrumental piece that sets the same slow pace and one dimensional riffage all the way through to its agonizing end.

Megalith Levitation music is slightly more diverse and I think I like it a bit more. First there's "Opium Ceremony", which has that very ritualistic and dark atmosphere, which really gives a nice impression. "Despair" takes that further, but within its thirteen minutes duration it keeps the minimalistic approach, but there are some great riffs there. And I like the chanting vocals, they truly fit the musical ceremony, especially when combined with a screaming, almost black metal vocals. Good stuff.

I'm not really a person, who would listen to such music often - but I have to admit that both bands on this split made quite a positive impression on me. Their music is rather avoids hooks and it’s not something what would necessarily catch my ear immediately. But under certain conditions it can really work well. Not bad at all.

Verdict: 70/100
