Cultum Interitum - Poison of Being

CULTUM INTERITUM - Poison of Being (GODZ OV WAR - CD 2020)

I have to say that hardly any music I have listened to recently has been surrounded by such a thick, asphyxiating smoke of sulphur as it is in case of "Poison of Being" by Warsaw based project Cultum Interitum. The cold atmosphere of total darkness that emerges from it quickly devours the listener and its negative feeling overwhelms... No hope, no fun, no melody based riffs... Just annihilation of all positive vibes. Black tar fills your mouth and mind. Pure black metal, one may say. Indeed, although the musical patterns played by Cultum Interitum are more rooted in newer bands of this genre than in its 90's second wave, I would say.

More primeval and brute, more simplistic than bands such as Acherontas or Acrimonious, Cultum Interitum kind of delivers similar musical aesthetics (listen to "Funeral Womb" for instance). Riffs along with the drums create a wall of sound that can breed hatred, it all sounds kind of primitive, in a sense that it's nothing sophisticated or memorable, rather simplistic, there are no fireworks, but just savage, vicious playing with ghastly, possessed vocals. These riffs do not even sound impressive or unbelievable (but many of them I did like a lot), but they have something intriguing. As mentioned though, the ominous atmosphere is the most important factor of "Poison of Being" and in creating it, Cultum Interitum did succeed. It's not an easy album, its swallowing black tar can push many away, but I do insist you keep your attention, as there's always something intriguing going on. I like how it all develops here, I truly appreciate that Cultum Interitum didn't go the easy way and came up with an album that requires a careful listen, which you will not treat as a background music for daily routines. And I have to say that Cultum joins my favourite Polish black metal bands nowadays, can’t wait to hear more from them.

Standout tracks: "Into the Ossuary", "Funeral Womb"

Verdict: 75/100
