DIRA MORTIS - Euphoric Convulsions (LET IT BLEED - CD 2012)
I remember Dira Mortis from the times of their "Revulsion" demo (2001), when their music didn't impress me so much. Yet! Since then Dira released some very good albums and the progress in their music is great. Such "Psalms of Morbid Existence" belongs to my favourite Polish death metal albums ever. But here's Dira Mortis' debut full length "Euphoric Convulsions" from 2012. And I have to say that it's one of those albums, which you can tell have only two negative aspects: first, it's too short (29 minutes of music only!) and second is that it's not appreciated enough. In the field of underground old school death metal Dira Mortis are very good band and deserves much better attention.
It starts with short eerie intro... and then the fury begins and hell is unleashed. Fast, brutal, venomous show off of old school death metal, in the vein of US legends such as Autopsy, Immolation and Incantation for instance, but there's also a lot of the Grave-ish groove and viciousness as well. The construction of the album is quite weird, because there are only three songs on it, with four intros in between. It's not something what I would particularly like, this idea could work for such album as "Testimony of the Ancients", which is so progressive, technical and unique concept. But if we have a straight forward, brutal death metal, then I hate these breaks haha. Anyway, it's not important. These three songs rule. Their length (from 6 to near 9 minutes) definitely means that Dira Mortis tried some different song structures, especially in the field of old school death metal genre, so you could expect some tempo changes from very fast to crushing slow paced stuff. Nice, brutal riffage, groove, not so many melodies or shit like that, but there's enough of interesting ideas, arrangements and particular parts (great leads!) that it's all interesting from start to finish. So, if you want to hear quality monstrous death metal straight from the most putrid crypt, yet quite little known, then I can strongly recommend Dira Mortis and not only "Euphoric Convulsions" but also their more recent album "Psalms of Morbid Existence".
Verdict: 80/100
