PROFANAL / FUNERAL WHORE - Two Morbid Ways to Die (Blasphemous Art - split 7"EP)
Here’s one more really cool split 7”EP I have to show you and it is an EP with two bands, who perform the old styled, archaic death metal (so the only way it should really be). This time we’ve got two rather little known underground bands, which are: an Italy based Profanal and Dutch Funeral Whore. Both bands already have more than one recording in their discographies by now, but this split EP was the first thing I got to know from each. Interesting thing is that the musical style is not the only thing these two bands have in common, as both also have a female member in the line up! Yeah, this is really cool and definitely a great visual advantage of these bands hehe! In Profanal the vocalist is Rosy (and her voice is really shredding) while Funeral Whore’s Kellie plays guitar.
Anyway, let’s listen to the music, OK? Of the two bands I like Profanal a bit more. This band really crushed my skull with their Swedish styled old school death metal worship and man, they do sound like an old demo band from this country from the early 90’s. First, they have a classic production, the guitars have sound, which is like the classic Sunlight HM2 distortion (reminding me Entombed’s “Clandestine” mostly) and the vocals are great, so the whole has a slightly raw edge of the early demo materials from Sweden. Of course music wise Profanal also shreds with the Swedish death metal style, so if you think of the good old Dismember, Entombed, Nirvana2002, Altar and the likes, then yeah, you’ll have a clear vision of how does Profanal sound like. But it’s good, really, they have killer riffing and “Conquering Cemeteries” may sound like Entombed’s cover, but man, I really like this track. Profanal also delivers an awesome version of “Mourning”, classic song from Nirvana2002, which they’ve nailed perfectly, so what else can I expect? Great band, one to keep an eye on! And Funeral Whore isn’t really any worse, it’s just that the two songs they putted here are slightly less exciting but mainly due to the production they achieved, which is not as great as the other band has. The musical value is still very high. Funeral Whore also sounds very Swedish, but maybe add also some rotten American old school of death metal from such albums as “Severed Survival” and “Scream Bloody Gore”. There are some more melodic riffs and leads, some slower, doomier parts, but the whole music has a great obscure and morbid charm, which is just damn cool. Especially the second track, “Seal the Crow”, sounds so fuckin great, the opening theme of it is just classic Swedish death metal melody we all love to hear so much. Fantastic job, really. I already know a couple of songs form Funeral Whore’s “Step Into Damnation” first full length and I can tell you they fuckin shred there! Their album is going to be a killer.
So, I do recommend this split EP totally. They may be two relatively unknown bands, but trust me, they have the skills and quality for playing the Swedish styled death metal like they were born in Stockholm and had Absolut in their veins. The only thing that pisses me off is relatively poor quality of the vinyl, the pressing company must have fucked up something on Profanal’s side, as it skips several times while the vinyl is brand new! It really disturbs when listen to it, but what to do… The music is great anyway.
Final rate: 80/100
